Monday

Today in class we will do a detailed review of Chapter 2 for the test tomorrow.

In the event that we don’t finish the film on “cells” that we started on Friday,we’ll finish that before we do our test review.

Tuesday

Today we will take the Chapter 2 cumulative test. Students can study for this test by reviewing Chapter 2 of their textbooks and their workbooks.

Wednesday

Today , the students will get an introductory lesson on cells, complete with a demonstration which they will record in their Science notebooks.

Thursday

We will visit the science lab today to look at cells through the microscope .

Friday

Today , the students will reflect on their visit to the Science Lab and illustrate what they saw in ther discovery. Students will be asked to make an advertisement to encourage cells to join an organ or organ system or to remain a single cell. For example: A single cell may have independence but lacks the help it needs to do its’ work. A tissue provides a cell with helpers that have similiar interests , but it requires cooperation and good “intercellular skills”.

Write a letter to a friend explaining how cells, tissues, organs, and organ systems are all related. This should be at least three paragraphs long. ( May be hand written or typed)Hint: by reading pages 56 through 59 in the Science text, the student can gain insights into these relationships.

The Chemistry of Life Booklet

The following will be accomplished by the student during class this week. This is not a homework assignment.
This booklet, made by students will incorporate the following items:

1. Page one , the title page, should say,” The Chemistry of Life” and needs to iclude the six elements ( from the periodic table) that make up all living things.

2. Page two is the” Proteins” page. The student must name at least four characteristics of proteins that are included in the text. Pictures are encouraged .

3. Page three is the” Carbohydrate” page. The student must name four characteristics of carbohydrates including simple and complex, their similiarities and differences, the way they are metabolized bu the body and the sources of them.

4.Page four should be titled “ Lipids” and should include a definition and four interesting facts about lipids including their role in the cell and storage of energy.Again, pictures are encouraged.

5.Page five should be titled ” Nucleic Acids”. Name four relevant facts about them and their role in the cells.

6. Page six should be dedicated to “ATP“. What is it and what does it do? Name four pertinent facts about ATP.Pictures are encouraged.

The booklet is graded on content. Neatness counts, but information is the goal.

Homework for the week of September 24,2007

This homework is due on Friday, September 28th.

When the human body is unable to make a necessary protein, the result is often a disease. Hemophilia and diabetes are two conditions caused by missing or defective proteins.Prepare a report on the cause of and the treatment for one of these conditions . Information should include the specific protein that is lacking, a brief description of how the condition affects the body, and the role of DNA in the disease. This should be about three paragraphs in length.

This week, we will be focusing on Section 3 of Chapter 2. The title of this section is ” The Chemistry of Life” and it offers a necessary foundation for Seventh grade Science. Students need to know this information as a basis for the rest of the year . Each day of the week will will address a very important component of the cells that make up living things.Students will need to bring their Science workbooks to class everyday this week.

Monday

Today we will talk about cells in particular. How they act and react and  how they get and use energy. We will see a video on cells for the students to get a visual on the characteristics of cells.

Tuesday

Today we will talk about proteins, large molecules made up of subunits called amino acids. We’ll talk about the function of proteins in the body and how we obtain proteins.

Wednesday

Today’s lesson is geared towards a concentration on carbohydrates. These are a group of compounds made up of sugars. We’ll discuss simple and complex carbohydrates, where they come from, their role in our bodies, and how we metabolize them.

Thursday

Today, we’ll talk about lipids and their functions within the cell. Fat and oils and phospholipids .

We will also discuss nucleic acids, compounds made up of subunits called nucleotides. Since DNA is a nucleic acid, we’ll discuss the role of DNA in the body.

Friday

Today’s lesson is dedicated to ATP, the cells’ fuel. We’ll discuss what the body does when it doesn’t get enough, and how it reacts when it gets too much.

This week will be full of Science discovery.

Monday

Today, the student will be given exposure to the nature of cells as an introduction to the entire first semester. Specifically, the student will learn that things move in and out of cells depending on their characteristics. There will be an inquiry, a demonstration, a quick video and a worksheet today to bring these concepts to the forefront. Students will be asked to log these in their Science lab notebooks.

Tuesday

Today, student will work in groups to solve problems regarding individual experiments. We’ll talk about control groups and variables and their effect on experiments.

Wednesday

Today , we will continue Chapter 2 , Section 3 which discusses carbohydrates, proteins and lipids. We’ll discuss all of these groups and talk about the different ways the body metabolizes these different forms of energy. The students will draw a picture to explain the way the body utilizes all of these.

Thursday

Today, we will do a review of all concepts in Chapters One and Two and emphasize the third section of Chapter Two, specifically, the role of carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids on the body.

Friday

When iodine comes into contact with starch, the starch turns black. We will see that demonstrated in class today using a variety of foods. I will ask students to bring in various types of foods to test this scientific law and establish which foods contain starch.

We will have a brief assessment on all material we’ve learned in Chapters One and Two today.

Food for Thought

What is the difference between the way our bodies metabolize simple carbohydrates and complex carbohydrates? What happens to the bodys’ supply of ATP when you are on a carbohydrate restrictive diet? Why do so many people gain weight after they come of a carb restrictive diet and begin eating carbs again?

The homework for this week is the completion of the Science in the News article that I have explained earlier in this blog. The student is to find an article ( on any aspect of science) and type a one page explanation  and reaction to the article.

If the paper is handwritten, it must be two pages long. The subject can be anything relating to Science that is part of current events. The student will be given extra credit if the paper is handed in by September 18th.

Plans for this week include:

Monday

Today we will do a review of concept mapping. Students will become familiarized with forming outlines from information in Chapter 2.

Tuesday

Today, we will review the aspects of the scientific method and work in groups to complete excercises relating to experiments.

Wednesday

Today, we will review material on Sections One and Two  of Chapter Two in preparation for the test on Thursday.
