This week will be full of Science discovery.

Monday

Today, the student will be given exposure to the nature of cells as an introduction to the entire first semester. Specifically, the student will learn that things move in and out of cells depending on their characteristics. There will be an inquiry, a demonstration, a quick video and a worksheet today to bring these concepts to the forefront. Students will be asked to log these in their Science lab notebooks.

Tuesday

Today, student will work in groups to solve problems regarding individual experiments. We’ll talk about control groups and variables and their effect on experiments.

Wednesday

Today , we will continue Chapter 2 , Section 3 which discusses carbohydrates, proteins and lipids. We’ll discuss all of these groups and talk about the different ways the body metabolizes these different forms of energy. The students will draw a picture to explain the way the body utilizes all of these.

Thursday

Today, we will do a review of all concepts in Chapters One and Two and emphasize the third section of Chapter Two, specifically, the role of carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids on the body.

Friday

When iodine comes into contact with starch, the starch turns black. We will see that demonstrated in class today using a variety of foods. I will ask students to bring in various types of foods to test this scientific law and establish which foods contain starch.

We will have a brief assessment on all material we’ve learned in Chapters One and Two today.

Food for Thought

What is the difference between the way our bodies metabolize simple carbohydrates and complex carbohydrates? What happens to the bodys’ supply of ATP when you are on a carbohydrate restrictive diet? Why do so many people gain weight after they come of a carb restrictive diet and begin eating carbs again?
