Monday

Today, we’ll do a review of all concepts learned in chapter 3.Pages 78 through page 81 in the textbook. Students will complete workbook pages 24,25 and 26. Today, the students in fifth period will take the Chapter Three test that all of the other students took on Friday. It was postponed for this class because of the Pep Rally. We’ll be a day behind the rest of the team for a day or two.
Tuesday

Today we will do a Chapter review from the text pages 80-81..We’ll explore the concept of diffusion.

Wednesday

Happy Halloween! Today, we will have an in class demonstration to show the process of diffusion.Students will be recording this in their Science Lab journals.Students will view a brain pop movie on diffusion.

Thursday

Today , students will read the first part of Chapter Four in class and complete workbook pages. They will complete a worksheet on the organelles as parts of a factory.

Friday

Students will bring in their Incredible Edible Cells and judge their peers’ work using a rubric that the students have already seen.

The Incredible Edible Cell due Friday Nov. 2

This week we’ve been learning about organelles, the “little organs” that make the cell work. As a project, the students are asked to bring in an edible cell. One they’ve made from edible things.Cookies, cakes, wafers, shells, ect. can be used as the cell. The organelles can be anything edible. Candy or fruit would work as organelles. As long as there is a “key” for the class to identify the organelles used, anything goes. The cells need to be brought to class on Friday, November 2 by 8:00. I will have tables set up in the classroom to accomodate them.

Due November  2, 2007

Students need to make an edible model of a Eukaryotic Cell ( Animal or plant) . The organelles need to be labeled appropriately ( Using toothpicks and paper in a flagpole style ) or using letters and having a corresponding legend on the presentation. All projects need to be brought to the cafeteria before the beginning of school on Friday, November 2nd.I’ll be giving ideas and suggestions for this project throughout the week.

Questions??? Please e-mail me at ggrant@scsk12.org.

Inventing the Incredible Edible Cell. This week the students need to plan and organize the steps to producing their incredible edible cell. A cell that is the model for the cells that we’ve been studying  (Eukaryotic cells) that can be consumed. Therefore, it must be made out of food products and have parts that mimic organelles. This week, just the blueprint ( or plan) is required for homework. This is due on Friday, October 26,2007. The implementation of the plan is the homework for next week. The finished product is due on November 2nd. All edible cells must be delivered to the cafeteria before the beginning of school on November 2nd. No Early homework this week.

This week , students will be exploring the Eukaryotic Cells: The Inside Story. Each day , we will take a part or parts of the cell and understand its function within the cell.

Monday

Today, we will have an overview of all the organelles within the Eukayotic Cell and specifically focus on the cell membrane (for which we had a demonstration in class last Wednesday) and the nucleus. We’ll begin a project that will continue throughout the week and culminate in a grade by Friday.

Tuesday

Today we will talk about the cells’ protein factories and the cells’ delivery system.

Wednesday

The Cells’ Power Plantswill be the focus of today’s lesson. We’ll explore the mitochondria and the chloroplast.

Thursday

Today, students will be given a closer look at the Cells’ packaging Center ( The Golgi complex)and the cells’ storage center ( vesicles) and vacuoles and we’ll talk about packages of destruction ( lysosomes). There will be a review today for the test on Friday.

Friday

Today, there will be a test on the functions of the organelles. Homework is due today, and the project that the students have been working on all week is due today.

Monday

Today, students will get an introduction to the history of cells. The scientists instrumental in the discovery of cells , the reason behind their discovery, and the development of the “cell theory”.

Tuesday

Today, using their knowledge of cells so far this year, the students will be scientists. They will develop their own cell theories. We will continue to talk about characteristics of cells, things they have in common and things that make them different from one another.

Wednesday

All cells have cell membranes. Today we’ll talk about the cell membrane and there will be a demonstration to help discuss the function of the cell membrane.

Thursday

Today, the students will be asked to create a concept map. They will choose a human organ system and identify its component organs. They will then use a concept map to describe the relationship of the component organs to the system.

Friday

At the beginning of class today , we will have a review of all of the concepts covered this week.

There will be an assessment of all of the information covered in class this week.

This week students need to write a three paragraph essay on the cell theory. What is it? How did it come into being? What scientists are responsible for it? When was it written? ( hint: page 62 of the cience textbook will help with this!)This homework is due on Friday, October 19,2007. Extra credit will be given to anyone turning it in by  Tuesday, October 16,2007.

This will be a short week with school resuming from Fall break on Wednesday, October 10, 2007.

Wednesday

Today, we will review the activity we did on Friday.

We wrote advertisements encouraging multicellular organisms to join an organ or an organ system. We’ll discuss the relationship between cells, tissues and organs and organs systems. Students will take notes on Chapter Three. They will complete their glossary entries for this chapter.

Thursday

Today, students will begin their “cells” project. This project is designed to familiarize students with parts of a cell and the activities each part plays in the way the cell functions.

Friday

Students will continue this project. There will be a short quiz on information in section 1 of Chapter 3.
