Monday, December 3

Science Lab notebooks will be brought up to date.Entries will be made in the glossary for new words found in Chapter 11.

Today students will be given a study guide for sections one and three of Chapter 11. We will do the study guide together in class. This will be done in anticipation of the test on Tuesday. Students will need to have their Science workbooks all week.

Tuesday, December 4th

Today, there will be a test for all students on information in sections one and three of Chapter 11.

Wednesday, December 5th

Today, we will begin our very important chapter on Plants and flowers. We’ll pull from recent information on photosynthesis and respiration and get the carbon dioxide cycle connection. We’ll look at parts of the flower and match flower parts with their reproductive functions. Students will receive a copy of a “Student information sheet for the Cycle of Photosynthesis and Respiration”. It is important that they understand the contents of these sheets and be able to explain it to someone else . They will be given multiple test questions on this concept in the Spring.( Handouts include “Flower parts and functions”, “Photosynthesis and Respiration”) In addition, today students will view videos giving an overview of flowers and plants and their role in nature. Students are expected to take notes on these videos .The information in these will be part of the test later on this week. Two important words today are reactants and products.

Thursday, December 6, 2007

Today, we’ll learn about plants. We’ll characterize them and classify them, talk about root function and structure, stem systems, leaves, leaf adaptations.( Handout includes”Plant illustration”)

Friday, December 7,2007

Homework (Science in the News ) is due today! Today we’ll talk abut flowers and reproduction. Flower fertilization will be discussed in detail today. .(Handout includes “Flower fertilization and pollination”There will be a short quiz today on the information given so far this week.

* All handouts must be returned for a grade by the end of class Friday.

This week will be filled with important scientific concepts.

Monday

Today, students will be writing in their Science Lab notebooks in the glossary section. They’ll get an overview of all of the new vocabulary. We’ll do a demonstration to show the process of osmosis using a celery stalk.Vocabulary is listed in another section of this blog.

Tuesday

Energy and the Cell

Today we’ll talk about photosynthesis, respiration and fermentation. We’ll do illustrations in class to show the relationship between the processes. We’ve been discussing ATP since the beginning of school, and now we’ll have the chance to see the part it plays in these processes.

Wednesday

Today, we’ll finish the projects we began on Tuesday.Students will do the section review on page 93 of the text.

Thursday

Today, students will receive an introduction on the life cycle of the cell. We’ll discuss cell cycles ( the life cycle of the cell). We’ll talk about chromosomes, binary fission, homologous chromosomes, chromatids, the centromere and last ( but certainly not least)mitosis.

Friday

Today, students will have an assessment on all of the concepts covered this week during the first half of the class. The second half of the class will be dedicated to an introduction on mitosis, a concept that we will work on for the next week.

Homework is due today.

Congratulations to students on a fabulous cell making undertaking. The creations were fantastic. They generated some wonderful classroom discussions on cells and the students really rose to the occassion. Thank you to all the parents for their involvement in this project.

Homework for the week of November 5,2007

This week, we will reveive many important scientific concepts. For homework, students will write a three paragraph essay on the relationship between the processes of photosynthesis and respiration. You may want to format it as follows:Explain photosynthesis in the firsat paragraph. Explain respiration in the second paragraph. Compare and contrast in the third paragraph. If there is another way ( that makes more sense to you) to organize your paragraph, feel free to do it. You may include illustrations as part of your essay. ( Page 90 through page 93 of your textbook will be a big help in accomplishing this assignment) This is due on Friday, November 9th.
