Homework for week of January 7, 18,25 and Feb 1., 2008
Since the emphasis for the first part of this semester will be on the Science Fair to be held at GMS on February 11th, the homework assignment for this week will be to do a blueprint for your Science Fair Project. to work on the display of your Science Fair Project. Students have been given a handout called Science Fair guidelines. In it, there is a template that they will need to complete before they can do their Fair project. The template begins with the question and hypothesis ( due for homework on the 11th). The next part of the template is materials, variables and procedure. This is due for homework on Friday, January 18th. The part following is the results and conclusion which are due on the 25th of January. The written report ( also outlined in the Science Fair guidelines handout)is due on February 1. After all of these homework assignments have been completed, the student needs only to compile them in the appropriate format ( also shown in the Science Fair guideline material) and they are ready to turn in their Science Fair project.
Lesson Plans for week of January 7, 2008
Welcome Back! We’ve got an exciting new year ahead of us and I’m looking forward to working with students as we begin the second half of the school year.
Monday
Our county wide Science Fair is going to be held in February. Students will be doing their project first on a school wide level and those winners will go on to the County competition. The GMS Science Fair is going to be on February 11,2008. Students will receive guidelines for the Fair on January 7,2008. We will address the methodology used to complete these projects on that day.
Tuesday
Today, we will begin Chapter 19, States of Matter. We will discuss the four states of matter and do section one of the science book. We’ll talk about solids, liquids, gases and plasma and how they change. Boyles’ law and Charles’ law will be discussed.
Wednesday
Today , the students will take notes on the Chapter. They will be doing work in groups and will be making posters depicting Boyles’ Law and Charles’ Law and they will be presenting their posters to the class.
Thursday
Today, students will do two section reviews. One on page 504 and the other , on page 507 in preparation for the test on Friday covering all the information in Chapter 19, Section one.
Friday
Students will be given an assessment on all information covered in Chapter 19 , Section One.
Lesson Plans for week of December 15
Monday
Today we will talk about concepts in Chapter 18. Specifically,The Properties of Matter. The two properties that all matter has are volume and mass, regardless of the size. Today, we’ll discuss ways to describe matter . We’ll talk about physical properties of matter- ways to identify matter.
Most importantly, we’ll discuss the concept of density. Density is mass per unit volume. The density does not change when the size of the sample changes. Our demonstrations today in class will bring this concept to light. Worksheet will be given to students to practice calculating density.
Tuesday
Today we will discuss Chemical properties of matter. We’ll reflect on yesterdays demonstration to ascertain the difference between physical and chemical properties of matter.
Wednesday
Physical changes don’t form new substances . Chemical changes do. This will be discussed at length during class today.
Thursday
This is the last day of school before Christmas Break. Students will use class time to complete the glossary work in their Science Lab notebooks and we will view a video.
These plans may be changed or altered depending upon circumstances involving student performance.
Lesson Plans for week of December 10,2007
Monday
Today, we will have a demonstration showing some of the concepts we’ve been learning about regarding plants. We’ll talk about asexual and sexual reproduction and the differences between the two.
Tuesday
In some classes,we will go to the Science Lab today. Most students will be given n assessment on photosynthesis and respiration, flowers and their reproductive systems and the methods of pollination. Students also need to know the relationship between pollination and fertilization. We have talked about all of these concepts at length.
Wednesday
Today, all students on Team Seven C will take the Science Think Link assessment.
Thursday
Today, we will begin Chapter 18, The Properties of Matter. We’ll address the concepts of volume and measure the volume of liquids and solids. We’ll talk about Mass and the difference between Mass and weight. We’ll measure mass and weight and we’ll talk about Mass as a measure of inertia.
Friday
Today, we will begin Section 2 of Chapter 18. We will describe matter and use density to identify substances. We’ll have a demonstration to identify comparative density of
matter. We’ll talk about the differences between physical changes and chemical changes.
Today we’ll do a Chapter review of all concepts we’ve discussed this week.
Homework for week of December 10,2007
Since we are starting Chapter 18 (The Properties of Matter). For homework, students need to write a paragraph explaining the concept of inertia. In the second paragraph, students are asked to compare the concepts of mass and weight. In the third paragraph, they need to explain the relationship between mass and inertia. These concepts are explained in their textbook. They can read about them there and write the paragraphs in their own words.

Science in the News Article #2
This week, students need to find articles relating to anything in Chapter 11 that is part of current events. The content in Chapter 11 focuses on body systems. Tissues, organs, and organ systems. Articles related to that might be about bone marrow transplant stories, bone injuries, blood transplants,or any other related topic.Students might consider looking in the sports sections to find out about sports injuries of certain football or basketball players. The essay that accompanies the article must be three paragraphs long. It should consist of 1)What the article is about 2) the significance of the article relative to what they have recently learned 3) the significance of the article relative to their world.
