This week, students are asked to complete a written paper on their science projects. The format has been given to each individual student as part of their Science Fair packet. These papers are due on Friday.
This week, students are asked to complete a written paper on their science projects. The format has been given to each individual student as part of their Science Fair packet. These papers are due on Friday.
This week , we will begin Chapter 14, entitled “The Flow of Fresh Water”.
Monday
Today, students will learn about the water cycle. They will be asked to draw their own version of the water cycle showing concepts such as precipitation, runoff, evaporation, infiltration, percolation and condensation.
Tuesday
We’ll continue to discuss the role that rivers play in the movement of fresh water, learning that rivers are changing, dynamic systems that continually shape the land. We’ll discuss the factors that contribute to rates of steam erosion and talk about the life cycle of rivers.
Wednesday
Today, students will do vocabulary from Chapter 14 as a way to familiarize them with words that they will see from now on. We’ll talk about the drainage basin and students will learn to identify the stages of river development.Words are: erosion, watercycle, tributary, drainage basin, divide, channel and load.More words included in this Chapter are:
deposition, alluium, delta, alluvial fan, flood plain, ground water, water table, aquifier, porosity, permeability, recharge zone, and artisan spring.
Thursday
Today , we’ll talk about Stream and River deposits, deposition in water and on land and water underground ( Springs and wells) and underground erosion and deposition.
Friday
Today, students will need to bring their papers that are due for their Science projects. They have all been given outlines for these papers and we’ve discussed them at length. Their Science Projects are due a week from today and each student needs to display their project on a tri-fold board ( available at the bookstore for$ 3.00) Today, students will be tested on the concepts taught this week, primarily, the water cycle and accompanying information.
This is the third segment of the assignment that began the first week back from Christmas Break. With the completion of this assignment, students are ready to prepare their science boards for the Science Fair. Science projects are due February 8th in the classroom.
Monday
Today is a school holiday. Enjoy!!!!!
Tuesday
Today , we will begin the third section of Chapter Twenty, entitled ” Mixtures”. We’ll describe the properties of mixtures and talk about the differences between mixtures and compounds.
Wednesday
Today , we’ll describe the methods of separating the components of a mixture. We’ll analyze a solution in terms of its solute, solvent and concentration.
Thursday
Today , we’ll compare the properties of solutions, suspensions and colloids. Students will be asked to complete project they began on Tuesday.
Friday
There will be an assessment on Elements, Compounds and Mixtures today. This will be a combination of all information frm last week and this week.
This week we will begin Chapter 20. This Chapter addresses Elements, Compound and Mixtures.
Monday
Today, students will receive an introduction on Elements, Compounds and Mixtures. We’ll talk about elements. We’ll describe pure substances and the characteristics of elements and we’ll find examples of these. Students will see a “brainpop” on elements.
Tuesday
Today , students will learn how to identify elements. They will learn how to classify these elements according to their properties. They will be given a worksheet with exercises to complete.
Wednesday
Today we’ll talk about chemical symbols. We’ll look at the Periodic table and decipher what the letters and symbols on the table mean. Students will have the opportunity to create their own periodic tables.
Thursday
Today, we’ll talk about compounds. We’ll describe the properties of compounds and identify the differences between elements and compounds.Students will be given examples of common compounds. They will continue to work on their Periodic Tables they have created. They will be able to use these tables for their test on Friday. Therefore, it is important that they put the time and energy into being as specific as possible in the creation of their periodic tables.
Friday
Today, there will be an assessment on the first part of Chapter 20. Students will be asked to recall all that they have learned about elements and compounds and the relationship between the two. They will be asked to identify certain elements on the periodic table. Students will be able to use the periodic tables they have created ( but not their neighbors) during the test.
Homework is due today. The second part of their Science Fair project ( Materials, Variables and Procedure). Please refer to the paragraph entitled ” Homework” on this blog.
Some things that the students will need to know for the test on Friday include:I) The four states of matter Students need to be able to:1) Describe the properties shared by particles of all matter 2)Describe the four states of matter 3)Describe the differences between the states of matter 4) Predict how a change in pressure or temperature will affect the volume of a gas. II) Changes of State . Students need to 1) Describe how substances change from state to state. 2)Explain the difference between exothermic change and endothermic change. 3)Compare the changes of state.
