This week we will begin Chapter 20. This Chapter addresses Elements, Compound and Mixtures.

Monday

Today, students will receive an introduction on Elements, Compounds and Mixtures. We’ll talk about elements. We’ll describe pure substances and the characteristics of elements and we’ll find examples of these. Students will see a “brainpop” on elements.

Tuesday

Today , students will learn how to identify elements. They will learn how to classify these elements according to their properties. They will be given a worksheet with exercises to complete.

Wednesday

Today we’ll talk about chemical symbols. We’ll look at the Periodic table and decipher what the letters and symbols on the table mean. Students will have the opportunity to create their own periodic tables.

Thursday

Today, we’ll talk about compounds. We’ll describe the properties of compounds and identify the differences between elements and compounds.Students will be given examples of common compounds. They will continue to work on their Periodic Tables they have created. They will be able to use these tables for their test on Friday. Therefore, it is important that they put the time and energy into being as specific as possible in the creation of their periodic tables.

Friday

Today, there will be an assessment on the first part of Chapter 20. Students will be asked to recall all that they have learned about elements and compounds and the relationship between the two. They will be asked to identify certain elements on the periodic table. Students will be able to use the periodic tables they have created  ( but not their neighbors) during the test.

Homework is due today. The second part of their Science Fair project ( Materials, Variables and Procedure). Please refer to the paragraph entitled ” Homework” on this blog.
